Peking Opera Masks

Decode the secret language of the Chinese stage. We'll explore the symbolism behind the iconic "Lianpu" faces, where colour reveals character and design your own stunning, hand-painted mask to take home.

What You Will Experience

Step into the dramatic world of Beijing Opera (Jingju) without saying a word. The "Lianpu" (painted face) is one of the most iconic visuals in Chinese culture, a high-contrast code where every colour and line reveals a character's soul.

In this immersive creative session, you will decode this visual language. You will learn why a red face sings of loyalty and a white face whispers treachery, before picking up a brush to design and paint your own wearable mask or wall-art piece.

What You Will Do

  • Decode the Palette

Learn the fascinating "Color Code" of the Opera. Discover how Red represents loyalty (Guan Yu), Black denotes integrity (Bao Zheng), and Gold represents the divine.

  • Design Your Persona

Choose a traditional archetype or create a "fusion" character that represents your own personality traits.

  • Paint & Detail

Using acrylic paints and fine liners, you will apply bold blocks of colour and intricate decorative patterns to a blank 3D mask.

Workshop Activities

Choose Your Mask Style We provide high-quality blank plaster/pulp masks. You can choose your direction:

  • The "Traditional Master" Path: Recreate a classic historical figure. We provide templates for iconic heroes and villains, guiding you through the strict symmetry and patterns used on stage.

  • The "Monkey King" Path: A favourite for the playful at heart. Paint the famous Sun Wukong design—dynamic, mischievous, and full of vibrant yellows and reds.

  • The "Modern Aesthetic" Path: Use traditional opera elements (clouds, waves, fire motifs) to create an abstract, asymmetrical design that serves as a stunning piece of modern wall art.
