What is Sinology Studio?

Sinology, strictly speaking, is the academic study of Chinese language and culture. We think that sounds a little intimidating. So we do it differently.

At Sinology Studio Perth, you can enjoy a lovely little experience to connect and explore Chinese culture. We want you to taste Chinese culture through our fun, relaxing workshops, making something with your hands and leaving with a beautiful memory.

We strip away the intimidation of ancient art forms and make them accessible, personal, and genuinely fun.

No prior experience. No pressure. Just curiosity.

Our Origin

Sinology Studio didn't start with a grand plan. It started with a Thursday evening, a table full of materials, and a group of university students who just wanted to get recharged and explore something new.

Those weekly workshops at St. Catherine's College, UWA - founded by Angel Ma, became something none of us expected. Students from a dozen different countries, most of them with no background in Chinese art, would leave as friends. Not because of what they made, but because of what happened while they were making it.

That was the moment we understood what this was really about. Not art history. Not cultural preservation. Just people - slowing down, focusing, and finding something meaningful in an ancient technique that suddenly felt very alive.

The Perth Chapter of Sinology Studio grew from that realisation. To take what started in a college common room and open it to the whole city. To anyone who's ever been curious but didn't know where to start.

What We Believe

Accessibility

Traditional techniques aren't reserved for experts. They're for anyone willing to try. And the work you create will be genuinely, proudly yours.

Fusion

Culture evolves. When you bring your own heritage into the room and meets a traditional technique, you create something new and unique. We think that's worth celebrating.

Ownership

You will walk away genuinely proud of what you made. Not just the piece, but the memory and the story behind it. Find it a place in your home, your life, your everyday.

Curiosity

You don't need a background in art or history. The only thing is wanting to try. Try the stroke a different way, pick an unexpected colour, break the rule just slightly. That's the fun part.
