Chinese Paper Folding

Create, decorate and play with your mini paper zoo.

What You Will Experience

Taste the lighter side of Chinese tradition in this hands-on, joyful workshop. We explore the art of Zhezhi (Chinese paper folding), moving beyond rigid geometry to create characters full of personality and life.

This session puts a local twist on tradition by combining classic Chinese folds with Australian icons. You won’t just be folding paper; you’ll be building a "Mini Paper Zoo", complete with hand-drawn expressions, accessories, and a display habitat to take home.

What You Will Do

  1. Master the Fold: Learn essential folding techniques to transform flat square paper into 3D creatures.

  2. Add Personality: Use markers to draw expressions—make your frog mischievous, your bunny shy, or your koala sleepy.

  3. Play & Display: Learn to fold a functional container or boat to hold your animals, turning individual pieces into a cohesive scene (or a tidy desk accessory).

Workshop Activities

The Cast of Characters In this session, we will create the following collection:

  • The Jumping Frog: A classic Chinese childhood favourite. This isn’t just for show—it actually jumps! (We often end the class with a friendly "longest jump" competition).

  • The Gentle Bunny: Learn soft, rounded folds to create a cute rabbit, finishing it with floral patterns or pink cheeks.

  • The Aussie Koala: A special fusion design for our Perth studio. Create a sleepy koala and decorate it with drawn eucalyptus leaves.

  • The Habitat (Container or Boat): The final piece. We fold a sturdy box or traditional boat to serve as the "home" for your animals, perfect for displaying on your desk or bookshelf.
